“Part of the problem with a phrase like ‘be true to yourself’ is that it really isn’t about you at all. It’s about the people around you. I think what people are really saying is, ‘Don’t change, because I like you the way you are right now.’ It’s similar to the phrase ‘respect yourself,’ which I hear as, “Please act in a way that allows me to respect you.'”
